  1. Who are we?

Dussault De Blois Lemay Beauchesne LLP (hereinafter “DLB”) is a law firm of more than a dozen lawyers offering legal advice and representation services in various areas of law.

DLB recognizes the importance of the confidentiality and sensitivity of the personal information it obtains in the course of its activities. Personal information is collected, used, disclosed and retained in accordance with the Civil Code of Quebec, the Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector (CQLR c. P-39.1), the Professional Code (CQLR c. C-26), the Act respecting the Barreau du Québec (CQLR c. B-1), and the regulations made pursuant to these Acts (the “Acts”).

This policy describes the principles and practices that DLB follows in the handling of personal information. It applies to DLB and any person providing services on its behalf, and to all personal information processed by DLB, including, without limitation, the information collected through the website owned and operated by DLB, available at https://www.dlblegal.ca/en/home/.

  1. What types of personal information do we collect?

Personal information is defined in the Acts as any information about an individual that can be identified, directly or indirectly. It can therefore be a single piece of information or a combination of information.

In the course of providing services and carrying out our activities, we must, in accordance with the Regulation respecting accounting and standards of professional practice for lawyers (CQLR, c. B-1, s. 4), collect the following categories of information:

  • Identity information
  • Contact details and communication preferences
  • Information necessary for the execution of a mandate
  • Billing information
  • Statistics from Google Analytics, where applicable

How do we collect it?

Your personal information is collected directly from you, including when you communicate with us by mail, telephone or e-mail, in the course of providing services to you.

By voluntarily submitting your information to us, you directly consent to its treatment in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

If you refuse to provide your consent, some services may not be available to you.

We may also collect publicly available information about you if necessary.

  1. What information do we collect automatically when you use our website (cookies and similar technologies)?

We only use the pp_language cookie to improve the browsing experience. This cookie does not collect any personal information and is used only to personalize user preferences.

  1. How does DLB use your personal information?

The personal information you provide is used for the purposes for which it was collected, including:

  • To provide you with services and fulfill our contractual obligations
  • To comply with legal obligations or enforce rights
  • To recover any money owing
  • For recruitment purposes
  • To evaluate the performance of our services
  • To protect the privacy of our clients

If we wish to use your information for other purposes, we will request your explicit consent unless authorized by law.

  1. Is your personal information shared with others?

We do not share your personal information with outside organizations except our authorized service providers and partners for the purposes outlined in this policy. These include:

  • Regulatory bodies including professional orders and syndics
  • IT service providers and hosting services
  • Other professionals such as accountants, tax experts, lawyers, and notaries
  • Platform administrators for records, billing, and conflict checks
  • External data storage servers, including cloud services
  • Data compression, transfer, or archiving services
  • Banks and financial institutions processing transactions

Some information may be shared outside Quebec. No additional consent is required as these are necessary communications. Confidentiality is ensured by agreements and respective privacy policies.

  1. Where is your personal information stored?

Your information is stored at our offices at 2795 Laurier Boulevard, Quebec City, QC, G1V 4M7, and on-site servers.

We are transitioning to secure Canadian servers with Tier III security in compliance with applicable laws.

  1. How long will we keep your personal information?

We retain files for 7 years from closure as required by regulation. Personal information is only kept as long as necessary for legal compliance and service delivery. Afterward, it will be securely destroyed or anonymized.

  1. What are your rights regarding the personal information we hold?

Access, correction, and deletion

You may request access to your information and request corrections if inaccurate by contacting our Privacy Officer (see below).

Access is subject to identity verification and legal exceptions. If access is denied, we will explain why.

Requests related to third-party platforms must be directed to them.

Withdrawal of consent

You may withdraw your consent to the use or sharing of your data. However, we may be unable to provide certain services. We will explain the consequences to assist your decision.

Complaint process

You may file a complaint regarding our privacy practices with our Privacy Officer. You may also contact the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec at: https://www.cai.gouv.qc.ca. We encourage you to contact us first.

All complaints will be handled promptly.

  1. How do we protect your personal information?

We implement physical, administrative, and technical safeguards to protect your data. Access is restricted to authorized staff (e.g., legal, administrative, accounting, and IT personnel).

No transmission or storage method is 100% secure. If a breach occurs, we will notify you and the appropriate authorities as required.

If you believe your data is compromised, please contact our Privacy Officer immediately (see below).

  1. Who to contact if you have questions about this policy or your personal information?

The Privacy Officer ensures policy compliance, handles incidents, and processes access, correction, and complaint requests.

  1. How will this policy be updated?

This policy may be updated from time to time. We will never reduce your rights without your explicit consent. Changes will be dated and archived, and major changes will be clearly indicated on our website.
